Digitizing family history is exciting—but only if you stay in control of every file. Use this checklist to keep scanned photos private, organized, and backed up for the long haul.

Know Where Files Live

  • On-device: Most apps store originals locally until you export or sync. Enable PIN/Face ID on your phone so strangers can’t access them.
  • App cloud: Services like PhotoScanRestore encrypt projects at rest and only share them when you invite family members. Check whether you can export everything anytime (you can with us).
  • Personal cloud: Sync to iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or an external drive so you have at least two independent copies.

Privacy Best Practices

  1. Review app permissions: Only allow microphone/camera access that’s necessary; deny location tagging unless you need it.
  2. Use invite-only sharing: Instead of public links, send private invites so only relatives you approve can see albums.
  3. Keep captions thoughtful: Avoid posting sensitive info (addresses, account numbers) that might appear on scanned documents mixed with photos.
  4. Export periodically: Download ZIP archives after each batch and store them offline for redundancy.

Backup Strategy (3-2-1 Rule)

  • 3 copies: Original in the app, a local backup (external SSD), and a cloud backup.
  • 2 media types: Phone + SSD, or SSD + printed photobook.
  • 1 offsite: Cloud storage or a drive stored at a relative’s home.

Sharing Without Stress

PhotoScanRestore’s private timeline lets you invite relatives via email; they can react, comment, or add stories without downloading files. Need to share outside the app? Export high-res JPEGs/TIFFs and upload them to a shared iCloud album or Google Photos link with expiration dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay offline? Yes—capture scans offline, then export via AirDrop or cable. Enhancements queue until you reconnect.
Who owns my photos? You do. Our terms guarantee full ownership and easy export. Always skim any app’s TOS for clauses about AI training or data resale.
What if I delete the app? Download your archive first, or sign back in from another device; your encrypted library stays intact.

Protecting memories doesn’t stop at scanning—keep them backed up and private so every generation can enjoy them confidently.
