Old albums often glue photos in place and include precious handwritten notes. Here’s how to capture everything without damaging originals.
Step 1: Support the Album
- Use foam blocks or stacks of books to keep the album level so the spine isn’t stressed.
- Place acid-free tissue between pages to prevent sticking as you work.
Step 2: Capture the Whole Spread
- Open PhotoScanRestore and switch to Album Page mode.
- Hold the phone directly above the spread; the app will detect each photo plus an overall reference image.
- Take a separate shot of handwritten captions, even if they’re outside the photo borders.
Step 3: Tag Context
- Immediately add names, locations, or audio memories inside the app so you never forget who’s who.
- If you plan to print photobooks later, export both the cropped photos and the “master page” image showing layout + captions.
Step 4: Keep the Stories with the Files
- Use the caption field or metadata notes to transcribe the handwriting.
- Record a quick voice note from a relative explaining the scene; the private family timeline is perfect for this.
- Create a folder structure such as
1950s-grandparents-album/to mirror the physical book.
FAQ
Should I remove photos from sticky pages? Only if they slide out easily. Otherwise, scan in place to avoid tears.
Can I capture backside notes? Yes—slide the photo slightly if it’s loose, or photograph the entire page with the note visible.
What about large scrapbook items? Take multiple overlapping shots and stitch them digitally, or photograph from farther back and rely on AI enhancement for detail.
